From 1970 to 1987 Colonel Frederick Lough served his county as a surgeon in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. In 1987, he left the Army and went into private practice, but when he saw soldiers in harm’s way in Afghanistan, he accepted a commission with the U.S. Army Medical Corps Resevers and returned to service in 2007 at age 58. Col. Lough was twice deployed to Afghanistan where he performed hundreds of surgeries on the front lines of battlefields, saving many lives. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service during his second tour, and is now back on active duty, conveying the lessons he has learned to military medical students at the Uniformed Services University at Walter Reed Medical Center.
