Let's be honest, nobody wants a nutted axle (unless you're running fixed) so here's how I did the conversion.
At the moment, I'm fixing up a 1994 Claud Butler mountain bike and it gave me an opportunity to switch from a solid (nut) axle to a hollow (QR) axle. It's a pretty simple job and it doesn't cost much at all. I paid £10 for the axles and another £5 for the QR skewers.
Keep the same diameter as your old axle but when finding the length, just use the dropout spacing plus 10mm (5mm for each side)
