Catalonia’s biggest trade show since the beginning of the pandemic got underway today as the Mobile World Congress returned to Barcelona almost a year and a half after its last edition. The world’s largest mobile industry trade show is taking place in Fira Gran Vía until Thursday, with extra safety precautions due to the pandemic.
Around 30-50,000 attendees are expected at a reduced-sized Mobile World Congress which will have around 300 exhibitors, with everybody testing negative before entering the fair. Some of the world’s biggest tech giants such as Google, Samsung, and Facebook already pulled out of participating in person, but others such as Huawei, Orange, and ZTE were present to show off their latest innovations.
More than 4 million people in Catalonia now have at least one Covid vaccine dose, accounting for more than half the total population. However, health authorities are concerned about a recent spike in contagion, particularly among young people and students returning from end-of-year trips.
The Spanish government has reached a preliminary deal with unions and employers’ associations to reform the pension system. The reform would become the first of its kind in a decade, replacing the one approved by the conservative People’s Party.
Spain’s Supreme Court has rejected a legal plea by a unionist party to ‘urgently’ send independence leaders back to prison, but a final decision on the pardons granted to them last week is still pending. Today the nine freed leaders visited the government headquarters - the foreign minister gave Catalan News the cabinet’s view of the pardons.
The International LGBT pride day was marked by Catalan authorities today by hanging the rainbow flag from public buildings. They pledged to fight homophobia, and make sure those responsible for recent attacks on gay people are held accountable.
