Maharana Pratap, was a king of Mewar from the Sisodia dynasty. Maharana Pratap became a folk hero for his military resistance against the expansionism of the Mughal Empire under Akbar through guerrilla warfare which proved inspirational for later rebels against Mughals including Chhatrapati shivaji maharaj.
In stark contrast to other Rajput rulers who accommodated and formed alliances with the various Muslim dynasties in the subcontinent, the state of Mewar, led by Maharana Pratap, gained distinction for its refusal to form any political alliance with the Mughal Empire and its resistance to Muslim domination. The conflicts between Maharana Pratap and Akbar led to the Battle of Haldighati.
Battle of Haldighati
The Battle of Haldighati was fought on 18 June 1576 between Maharana Pratap and Mughal forces led by Man Singh I of Amer. The Mughals were victorious and inflicted significant casualties among the Mewaris but failed to capture Maharana Pratap. The site of the battle was a narrow mountain pass at Haldighati near Gogunda, modern day Rajsamand in Rajasthan. Maharana Pratap fielded a force of around 3000 cavalry and 400 Bhil archers. The Mughals were led by Man Singh , who commanded an army numbering around 10,000 men.
Battle of dewair
Its two commanders, Bahlol Khan and Sultan Khan were killed in personal combat by Maharana Pratap and Amar Singh . The remaining 36000 soldiers of Mughal army surrendered. It was the final and complete defeat of Mughals in Mewar.
All 36 garrisons of Mughals surrendered. Maharana Pratap was able to capture almost all the areas of Mewar.
Maharana Pratap vertically cutting Mughal commander Behlol Khan into two pieces along with his helmet, armour and even his horse.
Amar Singh led a hard fought battle to defend his territory, and personally killed the Mughal commander Sultan Khan and his horse by spear which went through both.
