On Sunday, 23 June 2024, during the Hungary-Scotland match, Barnabas Varga collided with the elbow of Angus Gunn, the Scotland goalkeeper when attempting to meet a Szoboszlai free kick in the 68th minute.
After the game it was confirmed that Varga had initially been unconscious, sustained a concussion, and suffered multiple fractures, several smaller and larger bones were broken in his face, and some were even dislocated.
The Hungarian Football Association said on Monday night that surgery had been successful if everything goes well, he will be released on Wednesday.
Varga's wife, 27-year-old Laura, witnessed her husband's horrific injury firsthand having traveled to Germany to support her partner and the national team. After the surgery she posted on social media: „ Thank you for your kind and supportive messages, Barni is over the surgery. He needs some rest, but he'll be fine."
After the accident, the Hungary-Scotland game continued and ended 1-0, where Kevin Csoboth scored a goal in the 100th minute, to give with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition. After going through this horrible moment the Hungarian players came together and kept going. That goal was definitely for Barnabas Varga.
