Back into Switzerland and time to drive the St Gotthard pass. There are 2 passes of Gotthard, the old pass (or known as Tremola Pass) made from uneven cobblestone in 1830 and the new pass which was paved in 1977. Unfortunately driving the old pass wasn’t much fun and is quite a slow and bumpy ride, although the views are spectacular. The new pass however is much more fun with great views of the Swiss Alps. St Gotthard pass is located at a peak elevation of 2,106m and is located between Airolo and Andermatt.
It’s another pass which is only open in the Summer months. It’s a route with moderate traffic as it’s a popular tourist route. The completely sealed road is in excellent condition and is wide with a safe width for passing oncoming vehicles. The surrounding scenery of the pass is spectacular with great views. This is quite a different road compared to the other Swiss passes, as there aren’t a lot of hairpins but instead there are a lot of sweeping bends, which allow for an enjoyable drive. This is a great driving road in the Swiss Alps.
