1929 Riley Nine Monaco - incredibly original
A ground-breaking design when it made its debut at Shelsley Walsh in the Summer of 1926, the Riley Nine in its original guise of fabric bodied saloon, caused quite a sensation. Designated 'Monaco' this attractive small car with its distinctive high waisted style and enclosed luggage boot was able to outperform cars of considerably more horsepower that cost far more.
Numerous other models were to follow, but the Monaco saloon remained the cornerstone of the Riley Nine range for over ten years.
Today, the Vintage fabric bodied cars are quite rare, as many have fallen prey to special builders over the years as time took its toll on the coachwork.
Supplied new to a Mr J E Wakerell of Erith, Kent, this Monaco was registered on 24th June 1929 and has had just two subsequent owners. Unrestored and in remarkably original condition, this car is in very useable 'oily rag' condition and deserves a sympathetic new owner to gently improve and preserve her while retaining her patina. The engine has been rebuilt with a Phoenix crankshaft and the radiator has been reconditioned.
The original supplier's plaque is provided, as is a 1939 tax disc, a number of bills and an original advertisement for the supplying garage - Bennett of Catford. Also included is the original buff RF60 logbook dating from 1929, showing the car's original colour to be blue with red wheels.
Vintage Riley Nines in such original condition are becoming very hard to find, so this car is sure to create considerable interest.
