Lovage is a perennial herb zones 4-9, grows up to 6 feet. Propagation by seed. Harvest and/or divide roots in spring or fall.
I purchased by seeds from Bountiful Gardens, link below.
Like a giant celery. An ancient herb eaten as a celery like vegetable or used like parsley. The whole plant is eatable, root, stems, leaves and seeds and can be used fresh or dried.
Harvest leaves throughout the season, for soups, gravies, salads, spaghetti sauce, meat. Roots used as a women's herb, with the same uses and preparation as Dong Quail.
I harvested the stems before the plant bloomed and used them in place of celery for a few dishes cooked and raw. I dehydrated the stems before the plant bloomed to use this winter. I also harvested and dehydrated the leaves to add to my herbal teas. Right now I am making a stick deodorant with the lovage leaves. The first seeds, I planted in the bed. I intend to leave the plants for now, but when the bed becomes too full, I will harvest the whole plant, including the root.
You can also freeze the leaves and steams for winter cooking.
There are a few recipes I found for lovage on line, but haven't tried them.
Plant likes full sun to partial shade, in well prepared soil with good drainage.
Europeans also refer to it as the Maggi Plant because its taste is similar to that seasoning. Best in stews, soups, sauces and other hot dishes.
Lovage offers a number of health benefits, including supporting kidney health, fighting harmful organisms, and supporting joint health.
