About Snail........
Ans: On behalf of all snails on earth to prove to you that we snails are very much useful to you humans as well as to the environment.
You call us ugly...but that could be just your opinion. Ah well. Maybe we're ugly after all. But do you realize that the cosmetics you use to make yourself feel pretty contain our mucus? Let that sink in! Ha! Our slime in itself is useful in many ways, like making many of you look beautiful.
Our slime has medicinal qualities too, you know. It can be used for soothing coughs and for relieving ulcers in the stomach. It does have a lot of anti-oxidants, which reduces the signs of aging. [See also: Freshwater Snails Of Africa And Their Medical Importance ( Link: shorturl.at/pqQSW ) ]
But I do agree that sometimes we cause a lot of trouble by destroying your harvest. And we're sorry for that. It isn't intentional. If you ever find too much loss in your harvest because of us, feel free to eat us. We mean it. We're really tasty when fried. ;)
Although not perfect, our shells contain organic matter that, when analyzed, can give some insights about environments in the distant past. This can be done by the study of stable isotopes of H and N, periodic growth lines, and deposits of pedogenic carbonates on our shells. Conditions like rainfall and temperature can be reconstructed for past geologies.
These snails' sensitivity can be useful to you humans to detect the changing temperature and acidity of oceans, and can possibly contribute to saving coral reefs. [Refer: Company Of Biologists ( Link: shorturl.at/jsuvO ) ]
Hmm...want more reasons on how we are useful to you humans? I think that's enough. Let me shift our focus to the importance of our existence for the environment.
We snails are slow. And we regret to say that we are at the bottom of most food-chains. Certain rodents, salamanders, toads, frogs, etc. rely on our existence to survive. Most of them feed on us, and our low numbers in the environment can possibly de-stabilize their population.
We feed mostly on leaves, and we are nature's assistants in degradation. We greatly affect the decomposition of leaf litters.
Apart from all this, it is interesting to note that even after we are dead, our shells still live on. Our shells contain calcium and are one of the naturally occurring sources on the planet. Some animals, especially birds, find their needed dose of calcium from eating our shells.
So there's that. We are useful after all, aren't we? 4k video
