In November 2020, The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) virtually conferred its annual major prizes to recognize three distinguished leaders of the Parkinson’s community.
Lily Safra, chairwoman of The Edmond J. Safra Foundation and founding member of MJFF’s Board of Directors, was awarded The Edmond J. Safra Humanitarian Award in recognition of her leadership philanthropy. MJFF created the award in 2020 to honor Lily’s commitment to improving the quality of life for people and families living with the disease today. It is named in honor of the late Edmond J. Safra, international banker and founder of The Edmond J. Safra Foundation.
MJFF also conferred two research prizes to recognize scientists doing groundbreaking work:
The Bachmann-Strauss Prize for Excellence in Dystonia Research was awarded to William Dauer, MD, director of the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and professor of neurology and neuroscience at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, for his key scientific discoveries in dystonia, a distinct movement disorder and a symptom of Parkinson's disease.
Caroline Tanner, MD, PhD, professor of neurology at the Weill Institute for Neurosciences, University of California, San Francisco, received the Robert A. Pritzker Prize for Leadership in Parkinson's Research for her exceptional contributions to Parkinson's research and commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists.
