We're in the process of assembling our Vego Garden raised beds, which offer a remarkable modular design built to last up to 20 years. The Vego Garden company prides itself on its commitment to innovation and top-quality materials across all their products. One of the exciting features they offer is a trellis system as an add-on, something I might consider in the future. If you're seeking premium garden beds, Vego Gardens is undoubtedly the way to go.
Today, we opted for their versatile 9-in-1 modular beds, currently priced at $174.95 on their website. This was actually the company's first-ever product, and it has truly lived up to its promises. The beds are crafted from corrosion-resistant materials and can be configured in nine different ways. Assembling the garden bed is a breeze, thanks to the panels with pre-drilled holes that are easily joined using nuts and bolts. Within just 20 minutes, we've managed to assemble most of the garden beds.
Since we have a persistent gopher problem at our home, I take precautions by using hardware cloth at the base of each bed. Securing them in place with landscape staples underneath the garden bed ensures the pests stay away. Surprisingly, the hardware cloth has held up remarkably well, still looking almost new even after 7 to 8 years.
With my best effort to tighten each bolt, we then attach a rubber trim along the top edge to protect the plants from potentially touching hot metal. Once the garden bed is fully assembled, we add cardboard to the bottom to prevent weeds from infiltrating.
As I acquired a second raised bed, I prepared the other side of the yard, ensuring a level surface. Tilling the soil, clearing debris, and using a leveler to even the ground was essential for a successful setup.
For our garden beds, we're trying out a hügelkultur approach. Hügelkultur is a traditional East European method of building raised garden beds, akin to constructing a lasagna. It involves starting with a layer of wood, like branches or old tree stumps, which helps retain moisture and slowly release nutrients over time. On top of this, various organic materials such as grass clippings and kitchen scraps are added, tightly packed together. Finally, we apply 2 to 3 inches of topsoil and mulch on top. This technique is said to supercharge the beds, making them resistant to drought.
Overall, I'm delighted with these beds; they exude sturdiness and aesthetics. I'm already planning to buy more in the future.
