The band featured in this next upload is the main reason I purchased tickets for Decibel Fest immediately after they announced their participation as the direct support for The Black Dahlia Murder's second show back. This band's first record cemented my love of Death Metal when I was first getting into extreme music in High School, after some kid I knew gave me a thumb drive full of Metal, and I came across the Death Metal folder. There were a bunch of sick bands in there, but there were two French Canadian groups in there that spoke to me most, and got me completely hooked on Death Metal.
First I came across Cryptopsy's 1994 debut full length "Blasphemy Made Flesh", which would grow on my in time but was a little too terrifying at first. Alongside them however was another great Quebecois band called "Gorguts", so I started with their 1991 debut record "Considered Dead". It was a Canadian take on Old School Death Metal, with took a great deal of influence from the classic NYDM of the late 80s-early 90s, with a ton of sweet riffs, and these massively heavy grooves throughout. I listened to that record a million times that summer and it's still one of my all time favorites to this day. When I did check out the rest of their stuff, I was surprised to find that each record was completely different from the last, and though my teenage mind wanted more Considered Dead, I quickly shook off my disappointment after giving those other records their due.
Their second record "The Erosion of Sanity" from 1993 was Considered Dead on steroids, going for more of Technical Death Metal approach. Unfortunately the record wasn't the huge commercial success Roadrunner Records hoped for, so the band parted ways with the label, and went on a hiatus. Gorguts vocalist and lead guitarist Luc Lemay would revive the band in 1998 with the release of "Obscura", an extremely experimental record that completely turned Metal upside down on it's head, with a ton of dissonance and strange sounds never heard before in Death Metal. This was the record where the band "found their voice" and their stride. Their fourth record was 2001's "From Wisdom To Hate", which saw a nice mix of the previous three records' influences combined into one. Sadly, the band did not want to continue after the death of drummer Steve MacDonald (Rest in Peace) and Gorguts was put to rest in 2005.
During Gorguts' original run and after their conclusion as a band, Luc Lemay would occupy his time learning Classical composition at one of Canada's most prestigious universities for the arts, and working in the field of fine woodworking, before having another go at playing in a band again. This band was Gorguts' spiritual successor Negativa, which featured guitarist Big Steve Hurdle. Sadly, the band didn't work out the way they had hoped, and came to an end in 2010, followed by Big Steve's passing in 2012 (Rest in Peace). Shortly before Big Steve's passing, he reminded Lemay of Gorguts' coming 20th anniversary, and mentioned that it'd be cool to see the band's return for the occasion.
Thankfully his suggestion got the wheels in motion for a reunion and it was later announced that the incredibly talented duo of Colin Marston and Kevin Hufnagel would join on Bass and guitar respectively, with Origin Drummer John Longstreth joining in as well. It was later announced their first 2010 reunion show would be at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. I made sure to be there for it and not only was it one of the best shows I've ever seen, I made a few lifelong friends at that gig. Now more than a decade later, Gorguts was back after six years of quiet, and celebrating their return with a set covering material from both Obscura and Considered Dead. Needless to say, it was a spiritual experience for my inner teenager and I.
