It was turning into a grim festive season for York City supporters who, having seen their side lose 3-0 at Blackpool, now saw the Minstermen beaten 2-0 at Gay Meadow by Shrewsbury Town.
This meant that in their two meetings with Fred Davies’ side, York had only gleaned one point out of six from a side who would end the season in the relegation zone.
To be fair though, both Shrewsbury goals were very fortunate, one coming in each half.
The first was a shot from Paul Evans whose shot took a huge deflection to wrongfoot former Shrews keeper Tim Clarke just after the half hour. The second goal was equally as fortunate when Dempsey’s hit and hope effort landed at the feet of Stevens, who thrashed the ball through Clarke’s legs for 2-0.
It was a disappointing result in the final game of the calendar year but with all to play for as the clock ticked over to 1997.
