Today I will be talking about my experience using the new iPhone 14 for the past week as my main phone. I will be sharing what I like about this phone, as well as what I like less. The iPhone 14 offers some neat new features but is it enough to buy it over the now more affordable iPhone 13? Compared to the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which bring big new features to the iPhone (Dynamic Island, always-on display, A16 Bionic and more), the iPhone 14 is much more of a subtle upgrade and is very similar to last year’s iPhone 13. Compared to iPhone 13, iPhone 14 adds: Crash detection, Emergency SOS via satellite, Camera upgrades: main lens and selfie cam. Design and display. Same squared off design from iPhone 13. Nothing new, but still looks great especially in midnight colour. Matte aluminium frame and glossy glass on the back. Same notch, FaceID still fast and reliable. Same, but still excellent OLED display. 800 nits brightness. Colours look fantastic. iPhone 14 also has the same Ceramic Shield on the display, is quite crack resistant but scratches easily. Camera. Main wide lens, still 12mp but has larger sensor and faster aperture F1.5. Lets in more light, resulting in 49% improvement in low light and night mode is up to twice as fast. Then new Photonic engine, uses software to further enhance a photo after you take it. Creating true to life photos that are sharp with high dynamic range retaining detail in lighter and dark environments. The selfie camera now has auto focus, to be sharp at more distances and improves detail in hair for example. Video: Action mode, even better stabilisation. iPhones are known for their camera and iPhone 14 upholds that reputation. Performance and battery life. One of the big differences this year, compared to previous years, is only 14 Pro’s get Apple’s latest processor, the A16 Bionic. Would I have liked to see the A16 from iPhone Pros? Yes, but A15 is a beast and should run smooth for 4, 5 even 6 years. Difference between the A15 and A16, when it comes to normal daily use, will only show years down the road. Rest assured, the iPhone 14 is super fast and smooth to use. No lag, apps stay open for long in background, switching between apps is seamless - just as I expect. The iPhone 14 adds 2 big new safety features. First: crash detection, will Detect if in car crash and call emergency services if you don’t respond. Second: emergency SOS via satellite. Allows you to connect to a satellite from anywhere, even without cell service, to send a message for help. If you are out hiking, mountain climbing, even driving in a remote area - this feature could be life saving. When it comes to battery life, last year I was very happy with iPhone 13, even a year later it still lasts all day. Glad to say same is true about iPhone 14. Same 7-8hrs screen-on time. iPhone 14 battery is well above average, will not disappoint. Should you upgrade? Is it worth it? iPhone 13, no. Unless emergency SOS via satellite fits your lifestyle. But at the same time, iPhone 13 delivers the same design, great display, battery life and almost the same performance as the iPhone 14 but for $100 less. If you are on the iPhone 11, X, 8 - even today, the iPhone 13 will already be a big upgrade. This is where I really wish the iPhone 14 offered a bit more. Yes the iPhone 14’s safety features, camera upgrades and likely 1 additional year of software support compared to iPhone 13 are nice, but for $100 less, the iPhone 13 is a really compelling offer that I think most will be very happy with - thats how I see it.
