Ukraine hit a Russian weapon depot with US-made ATACMS missiles that it fired across the border for the first time, in a major escalation on the 1,000th day of the war.
The strike follows the Biden administration's recent approval for Kyiv to deploy longer-range missiles against targets within Russia.
According to Russia's Defense Ministry, Ukraine launched six ATACMS missiles at a facility in Bryansk at 3:25 a.m. local time (7:25 p.m. ET) on Tuesday. Russia claims to have intercepted five of the missiles, with the sixth reportedly damaged mid-flight. Debris from the damaged missile landed on military grounds, sparking a fire that was quickly extinguished. The ministry reported no casualties or structural damage.
This event marks a pivotal development in the ongoing conflict.
