Why are there so few female filmmakers? Prominent US women directors, from Ava DuVernay (Selma) to Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World), debate this urgent question.
The statistics say it all – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nominated 442 directors for an Oscar, including just five women. And only one has won (Kathryn Bigelow, whose 1995 film, Strange Days, screens in SFF’s Restorations). In this highly relevant documentary, each of these talented women reflect on different aspects of their career, including where discrimination against women played a part. Sometimes these stories are enraging, frequently funny, but sadly often familiar. Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture), Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), Mary Harron (American Psycho), Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Lucy Walker (Waste Land), and Brenda Chapman (Brave) – all of them faced the same tribulations. The good news – they’re out to change the story.
