The search for new therapeutic targets in the treatment of human cancer is constantly ongoing. All types of malignant tumour are characterised by an uncontrolled, invasive growth -- caused by abnormal cell proliferation, disrupted apoptosis and increased angiogenesis. On the molecular level, these pathological changes are mediated via various signalling pathways. Within these pathways, a particular receptor -- commonly referred to as HER3 -- plays an important role as a potent mediator of cell growth and development. HER3 is activated in a number of tumour tissues, for instance in the lung and the mammary glands.
