SERIES OVERVIEW:
Salute Your Shorts stands as an American television sitcom brought to life by Steve Slavkin and produced by Propaganda Films. It graced Nickelodeon's screens from July 4, 1991, to September 12, 1992.
Set against the backdrop of the fictional Camp Anawanna, the series drew inspiration from Steve Slavkin's 1986 book, 'Salute Your Shorts: Life at Summer Camp,' a collaborative effort with Thomas Hill.
Despite its brief airing and relatively scarce presence in home media, the show consistently secured its place as one of the highest-rated cable programs.
PREMISE:
The setting unfolds at the fictional summer haven, Camp Anawanna (a clever play on the phrase "I don't want to"). The narrative revolves around the lives of teenage campers, their authoritative and bossy counselor, and the myriad of escapades and humorous incidents they find themselves immersed in.
During the first season, the spotlight is on the power dynamics between the upright newcomer Michael Stein (Erik MacArthur) and the camp bully Robert "Bobby" Budnick (Danny Cooksey), both competing for the affection of girls at Camp Anawanna. The second season sees Ronald "Ronnie" Foster Pinsky (Blake Soper) taking over as the primary protagonist, offering a contrast to Budnick with his suave, preppy persona.
The show's title is derived from a common camper prank where a group pilfers a boy's boxer shorts and hoists them up a flagpole. As the stolen shorts flutter like a flag, other campers play along by saluting them in jest. The inaugural episode witnesses Michael falling victim to this playful trick.
Kevin "Ug" Lee (Kirk Baily) assumes the role of the children's antagonist as their somewhat clueless camp counselor. Dr. Kahn (Steve Slavkin) communicates announcements to the campers and staff through the public address system as the unseen camp director. The recurring character Mona Tibbs (Christine Cavanaugh) appears as Ug's love interest.
The ensemble of campers includes Budnick's hefty sidekick Eddie C. "Donkey Lips" Gelfand (Michael Bower), child prodigy Sponge Harris (Tim Eyster), the haughty Dina Alexander (Heidi Lucas), tomboy Telly Radford (Venus DeMilo), and nature enthusiast Z.Z. Ziff (Megan Berwick).
