Narrative medicine is a not so new area of study for medical students but it is gaining momentum as physicians are realizing that they need to be better communicators with their patients. If you want to find a doctor or evaluate how good a primary care physician is, see how much they listen to you and ask specific questions. Many times they will hear part of your story and jump to a diagnosis. This is especially needed in geriatric medicine where patient diagnosis can be complicated as many older people suffer from multiple conditions. The best doctors listen to their patients.
Dr. Beth Heuzey is an academic hospitalist at Norwalk Community Hospital. She teaches narrative medicine to residents where they incorporate art in their studies to discuss how they can better communicate with their patients.
