Starting off from a parked position on a steep hill often requires use of the hand brake so you don't roll back (perhaps into the car behind you). Yes, Automatic cars can roll back! Some cars have 'hill holder' function but this only holds the car for a couple of seconds so it is important to know how to do a safe hill start in any car.
This video takes you through choosing a location on a steep hill, stopping, securing (parking) the car then moving off again from the kerb.
If you don't live in a hilly area you might think you don't need to know this but there will still be steep up-ramps in a multi-level car park or maybe a friend's steep driveway and the possibility you will roll back. The worst thing about rolling back on a hill is it can happen unexpectedly and makes you panic. Once you panic, then things can get messy. The best way is to always use the handbrake to make sure you don't roll back on hills.
Have fun and we will catch you soon for your next lesson.
