French ministers for defence and foreign affairs visited Niger for two days in July seeking to redefine France's strategy in fighting insurgency in the Sahel. The visit followed a withdrawal of troops from Mali in June. The move comes as relations between France and Mali continue to deteriorate. Instead, Niger will become the hub for French troops, with some 1,000 soldiers based in the capital Niamey with fighter jets, drones and helicopters.
