The lecture on "How effective are international courts and tribunals in protecting the environment?" was be delivered by Dr Mamadou Hébié (Leiden Law School), His Excellency Mr Philippe Couvreur (International Court of Justice), Sarah Mead (Climate Litigation Network), and Sumerya Arslan (Centre for International Environmental Law).
The lecture celebrated the launch of The Environment Through the Lens of International Courts and Tribunals and explored the challenges and opportunities faced by this system in protecting the environment.
Additionally, the book examines the strengths and weaknesses of different international judicial and arbitral fora with respect to the settlement of environmental disputes and contrasts their role with that of other means of enforcing international obligations in the sphere of environmental law, such as treaty compliance mechanisms and national courts.
