Climate-related events like hurricanes, floods, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires have already displaced many people around the world. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 1.2 million were forced to leave their homes in 2018.
By 2030, climate change could force 120 million people into poverty and migration in order to avoid starvation.
'Everywhere is affected by this. Rich countries. Poor countries. The Americas, the Pacific, Africa,' explains Mariam Traore Chazalnoël, an expert at the UN Migration Agency.
In 2018, the UN recognized climate as a driver of migration. Diplomats have since worked on policies to help those displaced by climate change.
'The more people raise awareness... then all of this is putting a lot of pressure on the international community to try to do something about it,' says Chazalnoël.
