This early campaign during the French and Indian War (called the Seven Years War in Europe) was a critical victory for the British colonials after a series of devastating defeats the previous year.
The conflict took place on Lake George in what is now upstate New York. During colonial times this area was disputed between the French in Canada, and the British colonies. Lake George, along with Lake Champlain and the Hudson River provided important transportation through the rugged terrain of colonial America.
The Battle of Lake George was the first major conflict in the area during the French and Indian War, but would not be the last.
After the battle, the British colonials built Fort William Henry at the southern end of Lake George to defend the area.
For several more years fighting centered around Lakes George and Champlain, until the French were finally driven from the region in 1759.
