In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew test flies the Mavic Pro drone from DJI, beginning with a demonstration of the compass calibration procedure. The Mavic's folding controller includes an LCD screen that provides basic aircraft telemetry, which is also available from the DJI Go 4 app. The app is available for both the iOS and Android operating systems and runs on a smartphone or tablet connected to the controller to provide video from the Mavic's on board camera. The Mavic has two flight modes available: regular mode and sport mode. Sport mode allows for higher speeds and more aggressive maneuvering, but disables the front-facing obstacle avoidance system. The collision avoidance system is able to detect not only hard physical barriers, like walls, but also less-distinct obstacles like gently rising terrain or bramble. Sample aerial video from the Mavic's three-axis camera gimbal is provided, along with a flight endurance test, showing how long the aircraft is able to hover on a single charged battery.
