(14 Sep 1977) French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing and Polish Communist leader Edward Gierek released a special declaration in Paris pledging to continue working for a better understanding between European nations, with full respect for basic human rights. The declaration came after the two leaders met for the last time, after Gierek's three-day official visit. It followed a round of talks, largely behind-the-scenes, centred on France's desire to see east European countries show a more liberal approach to political dissidence.
