The European Union has made its first intervention into the international supply of COVID-19 vaccines.

Italy has blocked a shipment of AstraZeneca's vaccine that was supposed to be headed to Australia on Thursday,... in what became the EU's first intervention into the supply of COVID-19 vaccines.
According to Reuters,... AstraZeneca had requested permission from Rome to deliver around 250-thousand doses from its manufacturing plant in Italy.
The request was refused by Rome.
The Italian government's move comes as the EU placed temporary controls on the export of vaccines made inside the bloc,... following a spat with the British drugmaker and wider supply issues.
The measures will last until the end of March,... and will allow EU member states to reject authorizing exports if the vaccine makers do not honor contracts.
In January,... AstraZeneca stated it would be delivering far fewer doses to the EU in the spring than initially expected,... citing production issues at its plants in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Meanwhile,... following France's decision to allow AstraZeneca vaccines to be given to the elderly,... Germany and Belgium announced they will also give the green light.
Despite Germany previously approving the use of the vaccine for under-65s only,... German Chancellor Angela Merkel said recent studies provide enough data to show it is safe for all ages.
"It will probably be the case that Germany's expert panel on vaccine use- and we will happily follow here - will approve AstraZeneca for older age groups. Latest studies have given evidence for that."
Despite the EU's medical regulator approving the use of AstraZeneca's vaccine for all age groups in January,... the rollout was initially met with skepticism after some countries cited insufficient data on its efficacy for older people.
