Fakie is the old school term for riding your snowboard backwards. These days you’re more likely to hear the word Switch to indicate riding backwards.
Freeride and carving snowboards with short stiff tails make riding fakie more difficult. Twin tip freestyle snowboards are designed with switch riding in mind and make it very easy.
Riding backwards is a good skill to have. You never know when you may get spun around by unexpected bumps or land a spinning jump backwards.
Old school stance angles such as +21 and 0 degrees make riding fakie more difficult and newer duck stance angles such as +9 and -9 degrees make riding Switch easier. Especially if you're on a twin tip snowboard where the nose and the tail are essentially the same.
Making a few fakie turns each day, even if it’s only a couple turns, will keep your skills sharp and your day on the slopes a little more interesting.
