The Latin sail is one of the oldest sail types in the world. Shaped like a right triangle, it is believed to be Arab in origin. Once it was quite common for vessels on the Mediterranean to use the Latin sail. Today they are only used by fishing boats in the waters off of North Africa, in the Black Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. On the Adriatic, it is used only by the natives of the island of Murter – where they call it the Latin idro, instead of the standard Croatian jedro.
