During the 2021 12h of Mugello race organized by Creventic as the first of two Italian rounds of their 24h Series, I managed to record again these interesting KTM X-Bow race cars. They are developed with long-time partner Reiter Engineering and they come in GTX and GT2 form: for the first one, the X-Bow can be fielded in various 'experimental' classes of endurance series such as Creventic's 24H Series, the NLS (former VLN) on the Nürburgring Nordschleife or International GT Open, while for the latter the car can compete in the SRO’s all-new GT2 class (GT2 European Series of the GT Sport Club championship) which reduces aero and increases power over the GT3 class to make it more accessible for drivers with less experience.
GTX and GT2 versions are pretty much the same car but with just slightly differences. They are both powered by an Audi’s 2.5-litre turbocharged 5-cylinder engine which has received no big modifications, with only the injection valves, wastegate, intake and exhaust altered, alongside a tweak of the ECU. In GTX form it develops 530hp at 6,500 rpm and 615 Nm of torque between 2,500–4,500 rpm. For the GT2 the five-pot is reaching a power of 600 hp at 7,000 rpm and 720 Nm of torque. KTM claims this engine can easily reach 660hp.
For both cars, the engine is connected to a Holinger MF six-speed sequential transmission, with Le Mans prototypes-derived tech where gearchanges are electrically operated as opposed to hydraulic, helping the internal components last longer, improving precision and reducing weight by 7kg. Both eight-way traction control and ten steps racing ABS can be adjusted manually while the electric power steering replaces the hydraulic one previously used in the KTM X-Bow GT4. GTX and GT2 have a curb weight of 1,048kg, which will be subjected to BoP for GT2 class (1.250 kg should be the homologation weight for GT2 European Series).
Other differences of the GT2 Concept over the GTX are a full carbon fiber rear wing, Akrapovič titanium exhaust with racing catalytic converter and forged wheels by OZ Racing. Everything else from brakes to suspensions, carbon monocoque and roll-bar are exactly the same on both cars.
For the actual 12 hours race only one X-Bow GTX was fielded and that's the one in light blue and yellow. The other two, in full naked carbon, were only used to collect further data during Thursday's unofficial tests. This is why number 746 car has Michelin tyres and not Hankook ones as the main sponsor of the 24h Series suggests. Instead the X-Bow number 918 was fitted with Pirelli ones and that's probably because they were collecting data for the GT2-spec cars.
Enjoy it!
