On 11 Dhilqad, the birth date of Imam Reza (a.s.), we present a new manqabat, Mashhad Ki Fiza, recited by Imran Datoo, in Urdu with English subtitles, to celebrate the wiladat of our 8th holy Imam.

This nasheed is a poignant tribute to the city of Mashhad, Iran, where Imam Reza is buried. Today, his shrine hosts thousands of visitors each year, who come to pay homage to this holy personality. There are numerous accounts of miracles having occurred at this holy site.

Imam Reza(a.s.) was born in Medina on 11 Dhilqad 148 AH. His father was the 7th holy Imam, Musa al Kadhim (a.s.), and his mother was Ummul-Baneen Bibi Najma, who was of African descent. Imam Reza was not the only Imam to have black ancestry, bearing testament that in the eyes of the Almighty, superiority is rooted only in the piety of an individual. This is particularly relevant in current times, when the Black Lives Matter movement is at the forefront of social consciousness around the world. Imam Reza (a.s.) was known as “He with whom Allah is pleased”. He is well known for his skills in scholarly debate, and for his book, “The Golden Dissertation in Medicine”. The Imam was well liked, and is noted to have said,

“Behave with the friend humbly and with the enemy carefully, and towards the general people, with a smiling and blooming face.”

Imam Reza (a.s) had a close bond with his younger sister, Bibi Masooma, who is buried in Qum, Iran. The Imam has said, “Whoever visits Al-Masooma in Qom, it is as if he has visited me.” (Nāsikh al-Tawārīkh, vol. 3, p. 68)

Imam Reza (a.s.) was exiled from his hometown of Medina and made to move to modern day Iran. He spent the last period of his life imprisoned in the town of Sanabad, known today as Mashhad, Iran, and was left to languish in jail, lonely and vulnerable in a strange land. How ironic that, after his death, crowds flock towards his shrine in an attempt to seek closeness to Imam Reza (a.s.). This pilgrimage is one of the largest performed by Muslims each year. Ho shehr koi bhi duniya ka mashad ki Fiza mein rehta hu
Mashad mein rahu to lagta hai, yun shehre khuda mein rehta hu

1. Ye soch ke apni saanso(n) ka har raat hisaar banaya hai
Main naame raza ke sadqe mein darbaare raza mein rehta hu

2. Ay waaliye mashhad naam tera haan mere kalam ki taaqat hai
Darbaare shahi se nafrat hai main apni haya mein rehta hu

3. Rakhsaa(n) hai Sitaare kaaghaz par haan naame raza ke likhte hi
Har lafz muattar hai mera khushbu e saba mein rehta hu

4. Tukre tere dastarkhan se main, jis din se chun kar laya hu
Us din se fiqre rizq nahi, ke teri ataa mein rehta hu


5. Dekhunga main apni aankho  se, roze pe pohnchke mola ke
Bimaar jo unke ishq mein tha, ab mulke shifa mein rehta hu

6. Darkaar nahi kuch aur hame, bas izne hazoori miljaaye
Imran ke saath mein safdar bhi, mola ki sana mein rehta hu.
