It's the quaint, quiet hamlets, charming historical townships, magical coastlines and unique mountain villages that bring victoria to life. The famed Great Ocean Road and its lush hinterland conceal a trove of fascinating villages and hamlets many favourites of mountain bikers and also renowned for their quaint general stores.
Great Ocean Road:
The Great Ocean Road is every bit the coastal adventure. It's great to take in the famous limestone 12 Apostles rising up from the ocean, the wild surf beaches with those perfect breaks.
Loch Ard, Shipwreck Coast:
Charles Connell and Company of Scotstoun, Glasgow built Loch Ard for the General Shipping Company, part of the Loch Line of Glasgow that operated between Great Britain and Australia. Her yard number was 57 and she was launched on 8 November 1873. Her registered length was 262.7 ft (80.1 m), her beam was 38.3 ft (11.7 m) and her depth was 23.0 ft (7.0 m). Her tonnages were 1,693 GRT and 1,624 NRT. She had three masts and was a full-rigged ship.
Her owners registered Loch Ard in Glasgow. Her official number was 68061 and her code letters were WSGD.
The ship was named after Loch Ard in Scotland, a loch west of Aberfoyle and east of Loch Lomond. It means "high lake" in Scottish Gaelic. She gave her name to Loch Ard Gorge on the Shipwreck Coast.
The widespread popular belief that Gibbs mistook the opening of the nearby Loch Ard Gorge for Port Phillip Heads has no basis in fact or probability. There is no physical or cartographic resemblance whatever, ships are obliged to stop outside the Heads to take on a pilot, and Loch Ard never entered the Gorge. Loch Ard Gorge is the site of the most famous shipwreck on the aptly named Shipwreck Coast. The Loch Ard ran aground crashing into Mutton Bird Island in 1878.
El Dorado Victoria
El Dorado is nestled on the banks of Reedy Creek,
Although little of the original architecture remains, miners' cottages, churches, public buildings, almond orchards, ancient fig trees and mining relics are a reminder of the town's bustling past.
The name El Dorado came long before gold was discovered. In 1841, Captain William Fury Baker a settler and previously a Royal Navy Captain, renamed his Barambogie property, near Chiltern "El Dorado". Here, Baker had found his utopia, his 'pot of gold' and the means to a rich life. Little did he know that hidden beyond the boundary of his property lay vast wealth with several floors of alluvial gold and tin and that the miners to come would adopt the name El Dorado for the town.
Maryborough Railway Station:
The Maryborough Railway Station opened in 1874 and quickly established its importance as a major junction within country Victoria. The current building was built in 1890 – a grand red brick building featuring 25 rooms and a clock tower – and rumours circulated that the plans were actually intended for Maryborough in Queensland, or perhaps even Melbourne’s Spencer Street Station as it was so elaborate and large. In fact, when in 1895 the famous writer Mark Twain, visited he quipped that “You can put the whole population of Maryborough into it with a sofa a piece and have room for more.”
Ouyen Victoria
Ouyen is a small country town located in rural Victoria.
The township of Ouyen was established in 1906. The construction of a railway station saw Ouyen grow with 640 acres of surrounding farming blocks cleared for the agricultural farming of sheep, wheat, barley and oats (a strong and proud industry which prospers to this day). The town's water supply was originally transported via horse drawn wagons. The advent of gravitation channel irrigation enabled the agricultural industry to grow despite being far away from natural water sources.
