On the 3rd June 2015 the Giant Magellan Telescope Organisation announced that the GMT was beginning construction. The GMT is part of a new class of Extremely Large Telescopes which will push the boundaries of science and engineering. Australia has a 10% share of this world class instrument. On the 20th July the ANU hosted an event to explore Australia’s involvement in this exciting international science endeavour.
Assoc Prof Rigaut is the Head of the Adaptive Optics Group at ANU. He discussed how adaptive optics works and how it will be used to give the GMT a resolution 10 times better than the Hubble Space Telescope without going into space. He also discussed how adaptive optics is being used to track space debris.
