Welcome to Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. This is my Beyond Earth review, in 2021, reflecting on the second most-recent civ game which released after Civ 5 Brave New World, and just before Civilization 6. Civ BE released in 2014, and it's one DLC pack (Beyond Earth: Rising Tide) released around one year later in 2015 - hot on the heels of Civ 6's release!

So what is Civ Beyond Earth? For a modern Civ game, it seems like almost nobody even knows that this game is, where it came from, and critically - is Civ Beyond Earth fun? Is Beyond Earth a good civ game? Does it compare to Civ 5 or Civ 6? What about Civ Beyond Earth vs Civ 5? or BE vs Civ 6?

In this review of Civ Beyond Earth I discuss what the game actuall is, how beyond earth differs from other civ games, what made is feel bland and boring, and what beyond earth does well - including its nuanced Aliens system (replacing barbarians), its space and colony exploration early game mechanics, it's virtues (culture tree) and technology web (the tech tree), and how it's affinities mechanic works, and the various quests and victory conditions on offer in Beyond Earth!

So is beyond earth a good game? is beyond earth worth it? and what separates beyond earth from other civ games? Is this the true successor to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? Alpha Centauri 2?
