CPAC held another conference this past weekend, and Donald Trump was clearly the star of the event. Not only was he the featured speaker this year, but he also won close to 70% in the conference's straw poll for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. But things may not be as rosy as they seem, as the crowd members were also very open with reporters, telling them that they feel like Trump has too much baggage to run for president again. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

So over the weekend, we once again had another CPAC conference, the second one so far of this year, just one of many ridiculous little conservative conferences. But what was really interesting about this one of course, was that Trump showed up. He won the straw poll that they have every time they do a conference, 70% of the vote, 70% of this, again, heavily MAGA crowd said we want Trump to be the nominee in 2024. And then something interesting happened. See, what happened was you had reporters specifically from NPR, by the way, that went around and actually started talking to the people there, got them away from the group think of the straw poll and started asking them about Trump's chances in 2024. And low and behold, when you get these people by themselves, even the most hardcore Trump supporters, literally people there selling pro-Trump gear, Trump 2024 gear and they said, yeah, um, I, I don't think he should run again.
Let me read a couple of these quotes. One man told NPR, I think he tapped into something in the American psyche that hadn't been tapped into by either party, but he's a problematic character. He's a difficult person. There's too much petty stuff. Another woman said, there are some days where I think that would, that would be great and other days where I think it's time to move on. She then expressed her support for Ron DeSantis and said, he has all of the bulldog of Donald Trump without the offensiveness. So, and that's just, again, random sampling. They talked to many, many more people and got similar answers. Again, these are people selling pro-Trump crap, right? Trump 20, Trump 2024 propaganda. And when you get them away from the hall, when you get them away from the crowds, when they're not all standing there doing their straw polls with the group think, these individuals separately are like, yeah, I don't think we ought to do this.
I think he's a bad idea. The guy's got baggage. The guy's got problems. There's other people that are just as ferocious as him, that don't have any of the problems. And of course that then becomes another problem for Donald Trump. But I love this because again, the straw poll had him at like 70% wanted Trump. And I know he is gonna tout that as a major victory. Conservative outlets are gonna use that to say Trump is back. But folks, when you're polling Trump supporters on whether or not they want Trump to run again, the answer's always gonna be hell yeah, we do. The fact that it wasn't a hundred percent should worry Donald Trump. That you even had 30% who said no. But more importantly again, the fact that you had individuals out there in the crowd who were voting that yeah, we want you back, but I also don't think it's a good idea. That's the problem for Donald Trump. That's what he ought to be worried about. That's what conservatives ought to be worried about and to be honest, they are.
New polls that have come out over the last few weeks show that Donald Trump is in fact not the front runner for the Republican party. That distinction lies with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. A majority of Republicans, 55% do not want Donald Trump to run again. A majority of Americans, a majority of all American voters, not just Americans, but registered voters want Donald Trump indicted for his role in the January 6th riot and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. So a majority of the country wants the guy arrested. So it doesn't matter that he polled 70% at a Trump loving event. It doesn't matter that.
