A Victorian Manuel of Etiquette, With Hints on Politeness and Good Breeding - Introduction [1868]
I found this really interesting and is something I have wanted to do for a long time, is pick up and read a victorian etiquette book on ways to adhere to high society.
To be frank, I expected it to be really dated and rigid, but a lot of the advice in the book still stands up today in relevance. Obviously things like servants and whatnot are no longer relevant and some things are clearly dated, but the virtues of the book still stand the test of time, over 150 years later!
Personally, I feel our generation could do with some good manners - it's funny. the telephone must have existed during this time, so some of the advice seems shockingly modern - like calling people and whatnot.
I find I am learning quite a bit about how people conducted themselves, in order to stem being reduced to petty acts and drama, something that we seem to have forgotten how to do and have thus lowered ourselves to today.
It really is a treat to listen to - so sit back, relax, and enjoy the soothing sounds of my cultured voice hahaha..
