Our hosts this week welcome Joshua Popenoe, singer, lyricist, composer, and English pronunciation coach for speakers of Japanese!
Born in the US, Joshua lived with his family as a child in Malaysia and then England. Living in both Asia and Europe at an early age gave him a natural ear for, and appreciation of, the tremendous variety of sounds, rhythms, and textures that make up the music of human language.
For four years in England, Joshua attended the ground breaking free school, Summerhill, and after leaving wrote a book about his experience titled Inside Summerhill, published when he was 17 years old.
Founded in 1921, Summerhill School is run as a democratic community. The running of the school is conducted in the school meetings, which anyone, staff or student, may attend, and at which everyone has an equal vote. Members of the community are free to do as they please so long as their actions do not cause any harm to others. Students are free to attend the lessons of their own choice.
Joshua believes that his year at Summerhill encouraged the creative, self-driven path he's navigated through life.
Later living in Japan for 16 years, Joshua worked as a voice talent and musician. He performed and recorded original music and songs, wrote and recorded TV and radio commercials, did voice-overs, narration, and every kind of voice job imaginable.
Eventually returning to the US, Joshua decided to help Japanese speakers of English improve their pronunciation. The Popenoe Method is designed to address the specific physical and linguistic challenges that Japanese speakers face when trying to improve their English pronunciation.
