Postcolonial Concepts: othering| Postcolonial Theory, Postcolonialism
othering is the practice of representing and defining the colonized natives as inferior to their European counterparts. The term was coined by Gayatri Spivak and is used to discuss the discursive and other processes used by the colonizers to create and sustain the negative and inferior views and assumptions about the colonized natives.
For Spivak's explanation of othering, please read: Spivak. "The Rani of Simur." in Europe and Its Others (1985), edited by Francis Barker et al. (University of Essex Press).
Postcolonialism and postcolonial theory deals with the literature produced in the former European colonies and also focuses on the orientalist representations and colonial and imperial policies of the former European colonial powers.
