Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan apologized in a statement on Tuesday as the carrier cancelled thousands of additional flights amid a particularly chaotic holiday travel season, telling travellers he was “truly sorry” for the flight disruptions.
Jordan added the airline would continue to operate on a reduced schedule, but hopes to return to normal operations by next week.
Thousands of Southwest flights have been cancelled, as the low-cost carrier has struggled to recover from harsh winter weather in the lead-up to the Christmas holiday. Other U.S. airlines have also cancelled flights, though on a much smaller scale.
“I think more training needs to go in effect and also just to get a better system all the way around so that this won’t happen again,” Tiffany Dillard, who was picking up her mother from the airport, said about the disruptions
Southwest Airlines troubles have invited scrutiny from the U.S. Transportation Department, which said on Monday it would examine a large number of cancelled and delayed flights to determine if they were within the airline’s control.
