On Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 5:00 PM EDT, New Music USA hosted composer & artist Tamar-Kali; SESAC’s VP for Film, Television and Developing Media Erin Collins; and composer, artist, and educator Nico Muhly in a panel discussion moderated by New Music USA President & CEO Vanessa Reed about what we can do to reduce barriers and increase opportunities for the many composers yet to be included in one of the world’s most popular art forms.
This discussion was designed for anyone with an interest in music and film – from cinephiles to composers, from people who love our panelists’ work to artists wanting to know more about our Reel Change Film Fund ([ Ссылка ]).
This free panel discussion was part of New York Music Month Extended Play - an initiative of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME). Find your beat at nymusicmonth.nyc. We were pleased to welcome Shira Gans from MOME to welcome our webinar participants.
ABOUT NEW MUSIC USA'S REEL CHANGE FILM FUND
In October 2020, New Music USA announced the launch of Reel Change: The Fund for Diversity in Film Scoring, powered by SESAC and composer Christophe Beck, administered by New Music USA.
Reel Change is a five-year grants and mentorship program for composers of diverse backgrounds who have been marginalized in film composition.
This fund — which is accepting applications from US-based composers on a rolling basis — supports film projects currently in production, where additional funding and mentoring would help composers at a pivotal moment in their careers. Four to six grants averaging $20,000 will be allocated each year of the program. Supportable expenses include composer compensation, musician fees, recording and sound mastering fees, studio expenses, orchestration, production equipment, and more.
Applications will be reviewed by an advisory board made up of leading composers of film music, including Christophe Beck, Jongnic “JB” Bontemps, Kris Bowers, Miriam Cutler, Chanda Dancy, Tony Morales, and Pinar Toprak. Members of this advisory board will offer additional support and mentorship for interested applicants.
