The situation in West Asia remains tense after the killing of Hezbollah Chief Nasrallah by Israeli forces. Iran took revenge and fired a barrage of nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, but Israel intercepted the majority of them. Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei on Oct 04 made 1st public appearance after Iran attacked Israel. Khamenei justified Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack and declared that Iran would continue fighting. The site was protected by a host of defensive systems, including a possible Chinese laser counter-drone system. Photographs of the counter-drone system surfaced on the internet on October 4-5, initially believed to be the 'Silent Hunter' anti-drone system from China. Independent military experts later debunked the claims about the system being the ‘Silent Hunter’. Some observers noted that the system was more similar to the Chinese counter-drone system called 'Shen Nung'. Shen Nung’s radar can identify drones from up to 5 km away, with a laser capable of blinding targets at over 3 km. The unidentified system in Iran was deployed to protect the Supreme Leader from potential assassination attempts by Israel. There is speculation that Iran may have developed a clone of the Chinese system or reverse-engineered it for its air defence. The spotting of the system comes amid concerns of an imminent Israeli retaliatory strike against Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure. China, Iran have signed multiple agreements in the last couple of years as Iran reels under to sanctions of the US, its allies. If the presence of a Chinese laser counter-drone system in Iran is verified, it would further prove cooperation b/w two states.
