Sharan: Wife, Mother, Daughter, Wellness Practitioner & Carer...Let the roller coaster begin!
Sharan introduces herself to Carer’s Couch, describing her family, health and professional background. She recalls her un-excepted start to her role as a carer to her father several years ago.
Sharan explains that personal and professional day-to-day life stresses had negatively affected her, resulting in her own poor health. During her period of recovery, however, additional responsibilities were assumed when her father became very ill and moved interstate to be closer to familial support.
Little did she know that the role of carer would ultimately to fall on her shoulders for years to come.
Sharan tells of the eventual decision that would bring her father into her home to further enable his care in a safe, familiar environment. Although this may seem to be the right thing to do for a family member, she explains that a loved one’s poor health takes a severe toll on the carer especially as there is no way of predicting how long the arrangement will continue.
Sharan explains that the roller coaster experience of the life of a carer not only impacts the individual; it also extends to all immediate family members.
Support comes in different forms; as such, it’s about having access to the right information at the right time.
