Piediluco lake is located in central Italy : on its shores stands the village of Piediluco, a fraction of Terni. Located on the south-eastern offshoots of Umbria, with a branch that borders on Lazio, the Piediluco lake, even if with a width of 1.85 km², is the largest natural lake basin in the region after the Trasimeno . The name seems to be able to be interpreted as "at the foot of the sacred wood". Together with the Lungo, Ripasottile and Ventina lakes located in the province of Rieti, it represents one of the remains of the ancientLacus Velinus, a large basin of alluvial origin which formed starting from the Quaternary.

Irregular in shape with a perimeter of about 13 kilometers, the lake is located at an altitude of 375 meters, and has a maximum depth of about 19 meters. Its natural tributary is the Rio Fuscello, the other two tributaries are represented by man-made canals, one that connects it to the Velino river, the other, 42 kilometers long, almost all in a tunnel, which conveys a part of it to the lake. of the waters of the Nera river. The inflow and outflow of its waters are completely regulated for the energy needs of the industries of nearby Terni. The emissary, that is the Velino river, is diverted towards Marmore where it flows into the Nera riverforming the Marmore waterfall.
