The 8th Shakespearean festival will get underway July 19th at the 01d Globe Theatre in Balboa Park, and today, actors were busy rehearsing for the three plays. This year, King Lear and the Tempest will be presented, as well as Francis Beaumont's "Knight of the Burning Pestle." Beaumont was a contemporary of Shakespeare. Backstage, workers are preparing the vast number of Elizabethan-style costumes needed for the players. The three plays will be presented in rotation during the festival.

King Lear opens tonight at 8:30 at the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park. The beginning of the eighth season of the annual national Shakespeare Festival. The traditional old English county fair will precede the show with Elizabethan country and folk dancing, pastry and refreshment booths on the theater lawn. Don Gunderson is featured in the title role. Performances again tomorrow and Sunday nights. The Tempest and Knight of the Burning Pestle are next.
