🇪🇸 We booked a last minute trip from Cardiff to Nerja with Love Holidays at the end of May 2023 for 3nts. We flew into Malaga Sunday evening and had roughly a 50 minute transfer to our hotel. Nerja is one of the beautiful white towns of the Andalusian region of southern Spain. I love history, white buildings and cobbled streets and pretty beaches in little bays which these towns are known for and Nerja was exactly that! We stayed in Toboso apar-turis apartments which was perfect for our short trip! Just off the main square and a few mins walk to two different beaches and the Balcon De Europa (view point)🇪🇸
Day 2
Great breakfast at the hotel! Pretty views from the outside terraces - we had a walk around the area before heading to the bus stop.
We pre planned on going to one of the (voted) prettiest towns in the whole of Spain - Frigiliana.
Just a 10 minute bus ride from Nerja town centre with a regular hourly timetable and just €1.20 each way (pay cash on the bus) - we caught the 11.15am bus.
Frigiliana is such a beautiful town and can be walked around in a few hours - every corner was a photo opportunity, we loved it there.
Later that evening, we wandered into town and found a corner full of roof top bars and restaurants- We found Buddha roof top Bar and stayed people watching and drinking cocktails until we headed down the street to find a tapas restaurant.
Day 3
We had a day of wandering around Nerja town…
We walked over to the the largest beach - Playa Burriana which had everything you’d need to stay the whole day… many bars and restaurants, toilets and showers, water sports, many sun beds and play areas for kids.
It was getting really hot - around 26 degrees or so therefore, after souvenir shopping and icecream, we headed back to our hotel to go into the pool. It was freezing and took us ages to go in! But once in it was so lovely, a wedding had started at our hotel, just behind the breakfast building and we could hear it all so had to be quiet.
Our last night in Nerja and another rooftop bar was the plan. We went to Volk’s bar first and loved it there so stayed for a few cocktails! Next, we found a gorgeous Tapas restaurant and shared a few dishes before heading back to the square that has the Balcon De Europa viewpoint, next to our hotel for a few more drinks. Again, due to the wedding, we couldn’t go to the Irish pub underneath our hotel which was a shame, but I did managed to take a video of what it looked like inside early the following morning.
Day 4
Our flight was at 5.35pm and we were being picked up from town at 1.40pm so we went on a trip to the caves.
The trip runs daily from a stand around a 8 min walk away from the Balcon De Europa, next to Restaurante-Cafetería Mirasol (google maps).
For a round trip (takes around 25 mins each way) plus entrance to the caves and entrance to Nerja museum it costs €21 on the day or, €19 pre booked online. The times change but are roughly every hour.
There are no stops on the train, no commentary it’s just essentially a lift to the caves and back. You could take a local bus but I would recommend the ride as it was nice seeing the views around Nerja and the mountains plus, it’s breezy so perfect for hot days!
The caves are one of the best cave systems I’ve ever seen! No ducking down and walking on slippery rock, they were impressive! The tour took around 45 minutes and on-site - there’s a cafe, information desk and shop plus gardens to walk around and a newly opened virtual reality room which we didn’t have time to visit and unfortunately we couldn’t go to the museum in Nerja town either.
We both loved Nerja and would recommend a stay here to everyone as it has a great mix of lovely bars and restaurants, beaches, nightlife (if we had time I would have loved to have gone to Oculto…looks amazing!) - the town is touristy but not ‘Brits abroad’ touristy, really clean and well kept with many shops and great transport links to all surrounding areas such as Malaga, Marbella, Granada, Ronda, Seville and of course the beautiful Frigiliana plus not so far from Gibraltar or a bit further away - Morocco! Not forgetting the people…. EVERYONE we met were so lovely!! Even the street sellers trying to sell us bags and jewellery - I would love to go back to Andalusia again and spend a week or two travelling around
