STORYLINE
Services to mark Easter Sunday were held across the Middle East, as Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox Christians gathered at traditional holy sites commemorating the day of Jesus Christ''s resurrection as recounted in the Bible.
Protestant Christians took part in a Easter Sunday service in the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem.
Protestants, who venerate a spot outside the Old City known as the Garden Tomb as the site of Jesus'' burial, gathered there early Sunday to pray and sing songs for Easter.
Many Protestant denominations believe Jesus was buried in the Garden Tomb just outside the walls of the old city of Jerusalem, while Roman Catholics believe Jesus was buried on the site of the Holy Sepulcher.
Meanwhile, in Bethlehem Christian Palestinians prepared for Easter by painting eggs with their children before attending Easter mass at the Church of the Nativity.
Easter this year comes amid heightened security as the territory remained sealed off by Israel.
Israel announced last week it was imposing a week-long closure on the West Bank as a security measure for the Jewish Passover holiday, which coincides with Easter this year.
