Policemen injured in an attack on a prison in northwest Pakistan by Taliban militants were being treated in hospital on Tuesday.
Dozens of militants armed with guns, grenades and bombs attacked the prison in Dera Ismail Khan on Monday night, freeing more than 250 prisoners, including 25 "dangerous terrorists," officials said.
Dera Ismail Khan's commissioner said the militants killed over a dozen people, including six policemen, six Shiite Muslim prisoners and two civilians.
He said authorities were searching for both the militants and the prisoners who escaped.
Fifteen policemen were wounded, he said.
The prison guards recovering in hospital in Dera Ismail Khan said they were totally overwhelmed by the militant attack.
One of the policemen guarding the prison, Hidayat Ullah, said that he and several colleagues jumped into an armoured vehicle at the main gate of the prison to fight back when the attack started late on Monday night.
"During this time, maybe either a rocket launcher or a mortar shell hit the vehicle. Two of our policemen were killed on the spot, and three of us were injured," said Ullah.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, Pakistani lawmakers began voting for the country's new president.
The prison attack in the semiautonomous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) tribal province illustrated one of the major challenges the new president will face.
Arriving at parliament in Islamabad to cast his vote, the Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, said it "shows that there is a war which we have to win".
He assured the KPK authorities that the federal government would provide all necessary assistance in solving the case.
Ruling party candidate Mamnoon Hussain is the expected victor in the presidential election, the outcome of which is decided by lawmakers in the Senate, National Assembly and the assemblies of the four provinces.
