When Russian tanks began rolling across the border in February, most people thought it was over. The US even offered Zelenski a plane to get out, to which he responded, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” That was the first among many surprises of a war that may well be ushering in a new era of warfighting.
That is, the era of the drone.
Ukraine didn’t have a fleet of aircraft to compete with Russia in the sky, so they got creative. Ukraine began building an army of drones and even put the call out to the international community to contribute to an idea that was already beginning to turn the tide of the war. People sent their personal drones, homemade drones, and even some people made the trip to Ukraine to help out as pilots.
Russia’s slow and outdated logistics convoys made for easy pickings, and their overconfident troops were completely unprepared to take on the weapons and tactics of the future. For a fraction of the price, Ukraine has destroyed billions in Russian military hardware.
Do you think drones will help Ukraine win the war?
