Too Much Negative Air Pressure Caused Grow Tent to Collapse
Time-lapse: 5 hrs
It is important to maintain negative air pressure inside your grow tent/space. Negative pressure means that more air is leaving your grow room than the air released from the room. With negative pressure, you can easily control temperatures, humidity, and carbon dioxide level in your grow tent/space without much interference from air coming from outside.
Problem: The walls of the tent pulled in so much that the pole supports bent and the tent semi-collapsed within 5 hours causing miraculously only minor damage to 2 plants. Reduction in overall yield as well.
Primary Cause: Too Much Negative Air Pressure.
Secondary Causes: 1) Instead of taking immediate corrective action when first noticed the tent pulling in a lot, opted for a temporary fix of just turning down the inline duct fan and opening the vent flap in the daytime. 2) cheap tent (frame not durable) 3) upgraded to 10” inline duct fan, which was too powerful for tent size. Ventilation System: Too much outtake and not enough passive intake especially with 10” inline fan.
Solution: Purchased higher quality 2000D diamond mylar tent with durable frame 50% thicker steel poles. Modifications to the ventilation system. Downgraded inline duct fan system from 10” to 6”.
Lesson Learned: Physics 101. Really need to understand airflow because every decision you make related to your ventilation system will impact your grow environment either positively or negatively.
