The upbound RICHELIEU is seen departing Lock 2 on the Welland Canal Dec.17, 2009. She passes the downbound CSL TADOUSSAC (seen in gray livery!!) which is heading towards Lock 2.
RICHELIEU was built in Belgium in 1980 (not sure whether it was at Boelwerf's Temse or Cockerill yard?) The ship's original name was FEDERAL OTTAWA; in 1995, she became known as LAKE ERIE, and at some point in 2009 she was renamed RICHELIEU. In this video, then, she has been known as Richelieu for less than year.
Richelieu was sold in 2013, and sailed on her own power to Aliaga, Turkey, where she was scrapped at the age of 33.
{Note: This Richelieu seen here (which is an aft-pilothouse design) is not to be confused with ANOTHER Richelieu, which was a front-pilothouse style ship. That one was built in Quebec in 1966 for CSL, under her original name Richelieu. CSL sold her to Algoma in 1994, who changed her name to ALGOCAPE. Algocape was sold in 2012, and towed to Turkey for scrapping.
So: there were TWO ships with the name Richelieu, but they did NOT have the same name, at the same time: the front-pilothouse Richelieu had her name 1966-1994. The aft-pilothouse one was named Richelieu from 2009-2013}
CSL TADOUSSAC was built in Collingwood and launched in 1969 - her original name was TADOUSSAC (without the CSL). She underwent a major rebuild of her midsection in 2000-01 at the Port Weller drydocks, after which her name was changed to CSL TADOUSSAC.
Note CSL TADOUSSAC's colours seen here: she has gray paint on her hull and stern, with the lettering painted black, but her mid-section is a faded red, with the side-lettering appearing to be faded black. Apparently after her rebuild she was painted gray to signify her role as a cement clinker carrier. I'm not sure when her colours reverted to the typical CSL all-red we see today.
Interesting also to note that TADOUSSAC ended up being the last front-pilothouse-design ship to be built for CSL.
